[오스카상Oscar Awards] '기생충' 최종후보 6개, 아카데미상 특집!(ENG Academy History)

세계 3대 영화제는 칸, 베네치아, 베를린 유럽 영화제입니다. 하지만 미국 할리우드 영화에 익숙한 전세계 영화팬들은 생중계되는 아카데미 수상식에 더 관심이 많죠. 2020년 아카데미 시상식에 봉준호 감독의 ‘기생충’이 작품, 감독, 각본, 국제극영화, 미술, 편집상 6개 부문에 최종 후보로 올라가는 영광을 차지하게 되었어요. 오늘은 미국 아카데미상은 과연 어떤 상인지 한번 알아보겠습니다.

1. 아카데미상은 언제 시작되었나요?

MGM 스튜디오의 창업자 루이스 메이어 (Louis B. Mayer)는 그의 집에 손님들을 초대했는데, 저녁 식사 도중, 다시)영화 산업에 도움이 될 조직을 만들면 어떨까하는 대화를 나눕니다. 일주일 후(상당한 추진력), 로스앤젤레스의 앰배서더 호텔에서 영화 산업관계자 36 명의 초청자가 국제영화예술 및 과학아카데미 설립 제안설명회를 듣게 되죠. 설립에 관한 기사가 곧 발표되었고 초대 회장으로 더글러스 페어뱅크스(Douglas Fairbanks)를 선출하죠. 정식 명칭은 영화예술과학아카데미상으로 줄여서 아카데미상이라고 명칭하구요. 

제1회 아카데미 시상식이 열린 것은 2년 후인 1929년 5월 16일 할리우드의 루즈벨트 호텔에서 시작되어, 1934년부터는 매년 개최되고 있는데요. 2002년 할리우드의 코닥 극장이 아카데미 전용 시상식장으로 사용되어왔고, 2013년부터는 코닥 극장의 명칭이 돌비 극장으로 바뀌어 진행되고 있죠. 아카데미상 시상식은 매년 개최날짜가 다른데 근래 들어 주로 2월에 열리고 있습니다. 2020년 92회 아카데미 시상식 현지시각 2월 9일 열릴 예정입니다.

2. 아카데미상은 왜 오스카상이라고 불릴까요?

수상자에게는 높이 34㎝, 무게 3.85㎏의 황금빛 남성 나상(裸像) 트로피를 주는데, 이 트로피를 오스카라고 부르기 시작한 것이 그 유래라고 하네요. 트로피의 모양은 영화 필름을 감는 릴 형태의 받침대 위에 중세 기사 느낌의 남성이 가슴 높이까지 오는 장검을 두 손으로 짚고 있는데, 이 황금빛 남성의 애칭이 바로 오스카입니다.

아카데미상 트로피가 오스카라는 별칭을 얻은 데는 크게 몇 가지 설이 전해지고 있는데요. 미국 영화예술과학아카데미협회(AMPAS) 도서관 사서였다가 훗날 고위직까지 오른 마거릿 헤릭 여사가 1931년 초보 사서 시절, 도서관 책상 위에 있는 황금상을 보고 자신의 삼촌 오스카와 닮았다고 말한 것이 가장 유력한 기원의 설이라고 하는군요. 오스카상이라는 칭호가 점차 널리 쓰이자 아카데미 측은 1939년 이를 공식적으로 받아들였죠.

미국 TV의 에미상, 연극의 토니상, 음악 부문의 그래미상과 함께 아카데미상은 영화인에게 주어진 최고의 권위와 명예의 트로피인 셈이죠. 오스카상 수상자에게 따로 주어지는 상금은 없지만, 청동 재질에 24캐럿 금으로 덧씌운 트로피의 금전적 가치는 약 500달러(약 60만원)입니다. 아카데미는 시상식 이름이고, 오스카는 트로피 이름인 거죠.

2000년 제72회 시상식을 앞두고 오스카 트로피들이 몽땅 도난당하는 바람에 다급해진 아카데미에서 1주일을 남겨두고 부랴부랴 트로피들을 다시 만드는 해프닝이 있었다는군요. 도난당한 트로피들은 시상식 며칠 전에 LA 코리아타운의 쓰레기통 속에서 발견되었는데, 누구의 소행인지는 밝혀지지 않았다고 합니다.

3. 아카데미상은 어떻게 심사되나요? 

아카데미상 심사는 미국영화예술과학아카데미 협회 회원들의 심사로 이루어지죠. 2015년부터 한국 영화인들 역시 아카데미 회원으로 위촉되기 시작되어 점차 다양성을 추구하고 있습니다. 영화 제작에 직접적으로 참여하는 사람들만 미국영화예술과학아카데미협회(AMPAS)회원이 될 수 있고, 영화 평론가, 언론인, 극장업자, 영화 팬은 협회 회원의 자격이 없습니다.

영화인으로서는 그 분야의 전문가들에게 인정받는 최고의 영예가 아닐까 싶네요. 협회 창설 당시 회원이 20여명에 수상 부문도 11개에 불과했으나, 현재 24개 공식 수상부문에 배우·작가·제작자·감독·영화음악가·영화기술자 등 회원이 8469명에 달합니다. 

회원 중에서도 영화 제작 및 흥행, 비평 등으로 일정 포인트를 쌓아야 투표권이 생기게 되구요. 한번 투표권이 생겼다고 영구히 유지되는 것도 아니고 주기적으로 영화 제작에 참가를 해야 투표권이 유지된다고 하네요. 원로급 대우를 받는 전설적인 사람 정도 되지 않는 이상 5년 이상 아무런 경력이 없을 경우 자격이 소멸되구요. 특히 작품상은 현존하는 수천명의 전문가가 선택하는 올해의 영화란 점에서 상당한 권위가 있는거죠.

각 부문의 수상자 선정은 위의 아카데미 회원들의 투표를 합산해서 정하는데, 각 분과에 속한 회원들이 우편이나 온라인으로 투표합니다. 작품상은 전체 회원이 투표를 하고 다큐멘터리와 애니메이션, 외국어 영화상은 별도의 심사위원을 선정하죠. 각자 소속된 부문별로 '1~5위', 작품상의 경우에는 '1∼10위'까지 순위를 매겨서 선호하는 작품을 투표한 후 최다득표한 작품을 선정합니다. 전체 회원이 참가하는 작품상이 최고의 하일라이트인 이유가 바로 8469명이 고른 최고의영화이기 때문이죠.

4. 아카데미상 대표적인 기록은 어떤 것이 있을까요?

'벤허(1959)', '타이타닉(1997)', '반지의 제왕: 왕의 귀환(2003)'이 각각 11개 부문에서 수상해 역대 최다 부문 수상 기록을 보유하고 있구요. 이 가운데 '반지의 제왕: 왕의 귀환'은 작품상 등 후보로 지명된 모든 부문을 석권하는 기록을 세웠다고 합니다.

오스카상의 가장 큰 상인 '빅 5'는 작품, 감독, 남우주연, 여우주연, 각본상을 말하고, '그랜드슬램'은 각본을 뺀 나머지 네 개 상을 수상한 작품을 뜻합니다. BIG 5를 모두 수상한 영화는 《어느 날 밤에 생긴 일》(1935), 《뻐꾸기 둥지 위로 날아간 새》(1976), 《양들의 침묵》(1992) 단 세 작품뿐이죠.

음~ 제가 생각하는 약간의 이변은 1940년 12회 아카데미상에 ‘바람과 함께 사라지다’가 작품상, 감독상(빅터 플레밍), 여우주연상(비비안리)을 탔으나 클라크 게이블이 남우주연상을 타지 못해 그랜드슬램을 놓친 경우이구요. 1995년 67회 아카데미상에 ‘쇼생크탈출’이 아카데미 7개 부분에 최종후보가 되었으나 “포레스트 검프”에 밀려 아무 수상을 하지 못함은 제 개인적인 안타까움입니다.

가장 많이 아카데미상을 수상한 인물 은 월트 디즈니로, 후보에만 59회 이름을 올렸으며 이 중 22번 상을 받았고, 비경쟁부문의 상도 4번 받아서 총 수상 횟수는 26번이나 됩니다. 2020년 ‘겨울왕국2’편은 장편애니메이션 작품상 후보가 되지 못했고, ‘토이스토리4’편은 최종 후보에 들어 있네요.

2016년에는 우리나라 배우 이병헌이 한국인으로서는 처음으로 시상자로 초청되어, 아카데미 레드카펫을 밟은 기록을 세웠구요. 2020년 봉준호 감독의 ‘기생충’이 감독, 각본, 국제극영화, 미술, 편집, 6개 부문에 최종 후보로 올랐습니다. 빅5 중 3개부문에 최종 후보로 선정된 것이니 대단한 쾌거인거죠. 오는 2월 9일 아카데미시상식이 올해처럼 기다려지는 것은 처음인 것 같네요

봉준호 감독은 제77회 골든글로브 시상식에서 ‘기생충’으로 외국어영화상을 수상한 후 “자막, 그 1인치의 장벽을 뛰어넘으면 여러분은 훨씬 더 많은 영화를 즐길 수 있다”라고 말했습니다.

The three world festivals are the Cannes, Venice and Berlin of European Film Festivals. But movie fans around the world who are used to American Hollywood movies are more interested in the Academy Awards being broadcast live. At the Academy Awards in 2020, Bong Joon-ho's ‘parasite’ was honored as a finalist in six categories of film, director, screenplay, international cinema, art and editorial. Today, let's see what the American Academy Award is all about.

1. When did the Academy Awards begin?

Louis B. Mayer, the founder of MGM Studios, invited guests to his house, and during the dinner, he talked about how to create an organization that would benefit the film industry. A week later (significant momentum), 36 guests at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles was invited to a presentation on the establishment of the International Film Arts and Sciences Academy. An article about the establishment was announced soon, and they elect Douglas Fairbanks as the first president. The official name is shortened to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The first Academy Awards took place two years later, on May 16, 1929, at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood, and has been held annually since 1934. In 2002, the Kodak Theater in Hollywood was used as an academy-only awards ceremony, and in 2013 the Kodak Theater was renamed Dolby Theatre. The Academy Awards ceremony has a different date each year, but it is recently held in February. The 92nd Academy Awards will be held on February 9th, 2020.

2. Why is the Academy Award called the Oscar?

The winners are given a golden men's trophy, 34 cm high and 3.85 kg tall, which originated from the Oscars. The trophy looks like a medieval knight with long sword that reaches the height of the chest on a reel-shaped pedestal that wraps  movie film. This golden man's nickname is Oscar.

There are a number of stories about how the Academy Award trophy earned the nickname Oscar. Margaret Herrick, a librarian of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), who later became a senior, told after seeing the golden statue on the library desk that it resembled her uncle Oscar when she was a novice librarian in 1931. The nicknme of Oscar gradually became widespread, and the Academy officially accepted it in 1939.

The Academy Award, along with the Emmy Award for American TV, the Tony Award for Theater, and the Grammy Award for Music, is a trophy of the highest authority and honor given to filmmakers. No cash prize will be awarded to the Oscar winners, but the bronze value of the trophy, covered in 24 carat gold, is approximately $ 500. Academy is the name of the awards ceremony, Oscar is the name of the trophy.

Before the 72nd awards ceremony in 2000, Oscar troupes were stolen and there was a surprise to remake the trophies for a week at the academy. The stolen trophies were found in a trash can in Los Angeles Koreatown a few days before the awards ceremony, but it was not known who did it.

3. How is the Academy Award Judged?

Academy Awards are judged by members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Since 2015, Korean filmmakers have also been appointed as members of the Academy and are increasingly pursuing diversity. Only those who directly participate in film production can become members of the American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), and film critics, journalists, theater makers, and film fans are not eligible.

As a filmmaker, I think it is the highest honor recognized by experts in the field. At the time of the establishment of the association, there were only 20 members and 11 awards, but now there are 8469 members in 24 official award categories including actors, writers, producers, directors, film musicians and film technicians.

Among members, it is necessary to accumulate points for film production, entertainment, criticism, etc, in order to get the right to vote. Once they have the right to vote, it is not permanently maintained. If they haven't had any experience for more than five years, their qualification will expire unless they are a legendary person who is treated as an elder. In particular, the best pricture award has considerable authority in that it is the movie of the year selected by thousands of existing professionals.

The winners of each category will be summed up by the academy's votes, which members of each division will vote by mail or online. Prizes will be voted on by all members and separate judges for documentary, animation and foreign language awards. Each category belongs to the 1st to 5th, and in the case of awards, the 1st to 10th rankings are used to vote for the favorite works, and then the works with the most votes are selected. The reason why the best picture award is especially highlighted in the awards is because it is the best movie selected by 8469 people.

4. What are special records of the Academy Awards?

Ben Hur (1959), Titanic (1997), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) have won the 11 awards, respectively, and have the highest record ever. Among them,’ the Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ is said to have set the record for the smashing of all nominated categories including best picture.

Big 5, Oscar's biggest award, refers to a picture, director, actor, actress, or screenplay. Grand Slam is the work that won four awards. There are only three films that have won all BIG 5's: One Night Occurrence (1935), A Bird Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1976) and Silence of the Sheep (1992).

Um ~ I think a little bit of anomalies was that 'Gone with the Wind' won best picture, director, actress at the 12th Academy Awards in 1940, and it lost Grand Slam because Clark Gable couldn’t receive the best actor prize. 

In 1995, the 67th Academy Award, ‘The Shawshank Redemption’ was nominated in the final candidate for seven academies, but it could not receive a prize 

pushed by ‘Forest Gump’.

 

The most received winner in Academy awards was Walt Disney, who was nominated 59 times, received 22 awards, and received four non-competition awards. In 2020, ‘Frozen 2’ was not a candidate for a feature-length animated film, and ‘Toy Story 4’ was in the final candidate.

 

In 2016, Korean actor Lee Byung-h un was the first Korean to be invited as a guest presenter, setting a record of participant in the Academy awards ceremony. In 2020, Bong Joon-ho's “Parasite” was nominated for six categories: Director, Screenplay, International Drama, Art, Editing. It was a great pleasure as it was selected as the final candidate in three of the big five. I think it's the first time that I am waiting for the ceremony this coming February 9th.

 

Bong Jun-ho who won the Foreign Language Award for Parasite at the 77th Golden Globe Awards and said, "If you go beyond that 1-inch barrier, you can enjoy much more movies."
