[미국소요] 조지 플로이드를 통해본 인종 차별 주요 시위 사건들(ENG Black Lives Matter)

"흑인의 삶도 소중하다" Black Lives Matter 운동은 미국에 이어 전 세계로 확산되고 있습니다.

오늘은 우선 BLM 운동을 촉발시킨 주요 사건들에게 대해 한번 알아볼이요?.

1991년 로드니 킹 구타 사건

1991년 당시 25살의 흑인 청년 로드니 킹은 로스앤젤레스 210번 고속도로에서 음주 운전 상태에서 신호를 어기고, 경찰이 추격을 하니까 달아났죠. 그는 경찰들에게 폭력을 행사하며 난폭하게 행동하다가 체포됐고, 백인 경찰 4명에게 무차별 집단 구타를 당했습니다. 구타 장면이 미국 전역에 방송되면서 흑인사회는 당연히 분노하게 되었죠.

폭력 행위에 가담한 경찰들은 모두 기소됐지만, 백인이 다수였던 배심원단은 무죄 평결을 내렸고, 이에 분노한 흑인들은 1992년 LA 폭동 사태를 일으켰습니다. 

4.29 시민 폭동(4.29 Civil Uprising)라고 불리는 LA폭동은 로스앤젤레스 한인교포들에게 처참한 피해를 안겨주었죠. 한인타운에서 벌여진 약탈과 총격으로 LA교민들은 엄청난 정신적, 물질적 상처를 받았습니다.

2012 트레이본 마틴 사망 사건

 

2012년 2월 26일, 미국 플로리다 주 샌퍼드에서 방범대장 조지 짐머만(George Michael Zimmerman)이 동네를 순찰하다가 후드티를 입고 있던 낯선 흑인 청소년 트레이본 마틴(Trayvon Martin , 17세)에게 권총을 발사했습니다.

왜 그랬을까요?

짐머만은 '사유지에 수상한 인물이 들어왔으며 마약과 관련된 듯한 수상한 흑인이 있어서 쫓게 되었고, 짐머만은 마틴이 자신을 공격해서 정당방위로 권총을 발사했다고 주장했죠.

마틴은 비무장 상태로 술이나 마약에 취한 상태도 아니었고, 전과도 없는 청소년이었지만, 실제로 순찰관 짐머만은 코피를 흘리고 있었으며, 뒤통수에 큰 혹 두 개가 터져있었다고 합니다.

경찰은 짐머만이 정당방위였다고 훈방하게 되자 흑인들의 분노는 눈덩이처럼 커져서 미국 각지에서 항의 시위가 일어나게 되었죠.

마틴이 흑인이고 또 후디를 입고 있었기 때문에 방범대장인 짐머만이 공격적이고 폭력적으로 반응했다고 여겨서 사람들은 후드티를 입고 시위를 벌였고, '후드티 살인사건'으로 불립니다.

2014 에릭 가너 사망 사건

2014년 7월 17일, 뉴욕에서 불법으로 담배를 판매한 혐의를 가지고 있는 흑인 용의자 '에릭 가너' (Eric Garner당시 43세)를 체포하는 과정에서 용의자가 사망한 사건이죠. 

당시 사건을 촬영한 동영상에는 에릭 가너와 경찰관이 실랑이 중에 다른 경찰관 한 명이 기습적으로 넘어뜨립니다.

'숨을 쉴 수 없다'며 고통스러워하는 에릭 가너의 외침에도 목을 풀어 주지 않는 장면이 들어있어서 상당히 문제의식을 불러일으키게 되었죠.

천식 환자였던 에릭 가너는 병원으로 옮겨졌으나 사망하고, 여기에 해당 경찰관이 불기소처분을 받게 되면서 더욱 논란이 커져 시위로 확산되게 되었습니다.

2014 마이클 브라운 사망 사건

2014년 8월 9일에 미국 미주리 주 세인트루이스 근교의 퍼거슨 시에서 마이클 브라운(Michael Brown, 1996년생)이라는 흑인 소년이 경찰의 총에 사망합니다.

FBI조사결과에 따르면, 마이클 브라운은 폭력을 휘두르며 물건을 훔치고 경찰관을 폭행했고, 경찰관에게 심한 타박상을 입혔다고 합니다.

윌슨 경관은 그 후 브라운이 도주하는 것을 보고 차에서 내려 쫓아가다가 10발의 총알을 조준 발사했고, 브라운은 이 과정에서 총상을 입고 사망하게 되었죠.

2014년 11월 24일, 미주리 주의 대배심에서는 대런 윌슨을 불기소하기로 결정했고, 이에 2차 폭동이 일어나서 방화, 총격, 약탈행위가 발생하게 되었습니다.

이 사건을 도시명을 인용하여 2014 Ferguson Unrest로 표현하고 있으며, ‘퍼거슨 소요’라고 부릅니다.

이 사건 이후로 Black Lives Matter(흑인의 생명은 소중하다) 운동이 더 커지게 되었죠.

2020 조지 플로이드 사망 사건

2020년 5월 25일, 미국 미네소타 주 미니애폴리스에서 20달러 위조지폐를 사용했다는 신고를 받게 됩니다.

출동한 백인 경찰 데릭 쇼빈(Derek Chauvin)이 비무장상태의 흑인 용의자 조지 플로이드(George Floyd)를 체포하던 중 8분 46초 동안 무릎으로 목을 눌러 질식사시킨 과잉진압 사건이 발생했죠.

플로이드는 "저를 죽이지 마세요", "숨을 못 쉬겠어요"라고 애원했지만 경찰관들은 묵살했습니다.

이 과정이 그대로 영상에 담겨 퍼지면서 논란이 커지고 있죠.

쇼빈에게는 2급 살인, 다른 경찰 3명은 2급 살인 공모 혐의로 추가 적용되어 있죠.

현재 미국 전역에서 대규모 시위와 폭동이 벌어지는 중이며 경찰도 이를 강경진압으로 대응하면서 방화와 약탈사태가 걷잡을 수 없이 악화되고 있는 상태입니다.

미국사회에서 백인들에게 만연한 인종차별과 흑인에 대한 지나친 공권력 남용은 분명히 문제가 있습니다.

하지만 흑인커뮤니티에서도 원인을 제공하는 각종 범죄행위를 줄이기 위한 자구책 역시 필요하다는 생각이 듭니다.

제가 캘리포니아 한 거리를 걸어가고 있었는데 덩치 큰 흑인이 제 앞을 가로막으면서 “너네 나라로 꺼져라”며 욕을 해댄 적이 있습니다. 너무 무서워서 눈을 마주치지 못하고 도망가버렸거든요.

흑인들의 백인우월주의에 대한 반감을 다른 소수민족에게 화풀이하는 행위와 아무런 원인 제공하지 않은 동양인 주거지에서의 약탈, 방화, 폭력 역시 더 이상 정당화될 수는 없습니다.

차별 받지 않는 흑인들의 삶, 물론 중요하죠.

흑인폭동이 일어날 때마다, 아무런 원인제공을 하지 않은 무고한 선량한 희생자의 삶 역시 중요하지 않을까요?

Today, shall we look at the major events that triggered the BLM movement?

Rodney King beaten in 1991

In 1991, Rodney King, a 25-year-old black man, fled when he broke a signal while driving under the highway 210 on Los Angeles and the police were chasing.

He was arrested for acting violently against the police and being brutally beaten by four white police.

As the beatings were broadcast all over the United States, the black community naturally became angry.

All the police involved in the act of violence were prosecuted, but the jury, which had many whites, declared them not guilty, and the furious blacks caused a LA riot in 1992.

Called the 4.29 Civil Uprising, the LA riots caused devastating damage to Korean Americans in LA Korea Town.

The looting and shooting in the Korean Town has caused enormous mental and material injuries to the people of Los Angeles.

2012 Travon Martin death

On February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida, US security chief George Michael Zimmerman patrolled the town and fired a pistol at a  black teenager, Trayvon Martin, 17, wearing a hoodie.

Why is that?

Zimmerman said,'There was a suspicious person on the private property, and there was a suspicious black man who seemed to be involved in drugs, so he was chased, and Zimmerman claimed that Martin attacked him and fired a pistol in self-defense.

Martin was unarmed, not drunk or drugged, and a young man with no criminal record, but in fact, Zimmerman was bleeding and had two big bumps in his back of the head.

When the police advocated that Zimmerman was self-defense, black people's anger grew like a snowball, leading to protests across the United States.

Because Martin was black and wore a hoodie, people believed that he had reacted aggressively and violently, so people protested in hoodies and are called'hoodie murder'.

2014 Eric Garner's death

On July 17, 2014, the suspect died in the arrest of a black suspect, Eric Garner, 43, who was accused of illegally selling cigarettes in New York.

In the video that filmed the incident, Eric Garner and a police officer argued each other, at that time,one of the other police officers raided Garner.

The cry of Eric Garner, who suffers from saying "I can't breathe," contains a scene that doesn't release my neck, which caused a lot of trouble.

Eric Garner, an asthma patient, was transferred to the hospital, but died, and the police officer was subject to prosecution, which led to further controversy.

2014 Michael Brown's death

On August 9, 2014, a black boy named Michael Brown (born 1996) was killed by a police gun in the city of Ferguson, near St. Louis, Missouri, USA.

According to FBI findings, Michael Brown wielded violence, stealing objects and assaulting police officers, and severely bruising the police officers.

Officer Wilson then watched Brown escape, chasing off the car, aiming and firing 10 bullets, and Brown was killed in the process.

On November 24, 2014, the great jury of Missouri decided to prosecute Darren Wilson, and a second riot broke out, leading to arson, shooting, and looting.

The case is referred to as the 2014 Ferguson Unrest, citing the city name, and is called'Ferguson's riots'.

After this incident, the Black Lives Matter movement became bigger.

2020 George Floyd death

On May 25, 2020, Minneapolis, Minnesota, the police received a report that he has used a counterfeit $20 bill.

Derek Chauvin, a white police officer, arrested an unarmed black suspect, George Floyd died from  suffocation by Chauvin's knees for 8 minutes and 46 seconds.

Floyd begged, "Don't kill me," "I can't breathe," but the police officers ignored.

As this process continues to spread in the video, the controversy is growing.

Second class homicide to Chauvin and three other police were charged for complicity in second class murder.

Large scale protests and riots are currently taking place across the United States, and fire and looting are in an uncontrollably worsening situation as the police respond to them with tight control.

Racial discrimination and excessive abuse of public power against blacks in American society is clearly problematic.

However, I think the black community also needs self-help measures to reduce the various criminal acts that provide causes.

I was walking down a street in California, and a big black man insulted me in front of me, saying, "Go out to your country."

I was so scared that I could not make eye contact and ran away.

Black people's resentment to white supremacy can no longer be justified by looting, arson, and violence in Asian dwellings that have no cause for black discrimination.

The lives of black people who are not discriminated, of course, are important.

Whenever a black riot occurs, I think  the lives of an innocent good victim who hasn't  triggered the  Black discrimination also matter.

Human lives matter!
