오늘은 오스카가 선택한 2019년 최고의 영화 ‘기생충’의 작품성에 대해 살펴보겠습니다.

빈부 격차로 인한 갈등의 시대

영화 ‘기생충’은 자본주의 시대에서 보여지는 빈부의 차이를 세심하게 보여주고 있습니다.

봉테일이 돋보이죠.

기택은 곰팡이 낀 식빵을 먹고, 박사장네는 짜파구리에도 한우 채끝 등심을 넣죠.

강아지 육포를 맛있게 먹는 기정의 모습과 다송의 생일 파티의 엄청난 음식이 대조적입니다.

이 영화에서 박사장은 IT기업의 신흥 부자로 보입니다. 그는 우리가 생각하는 갑질하는 부자는 결코 아니에요. 단지 ‘선’을 넘지 않기를 바랄 뿐이죠.

하지만 이는 부자들만의 경계심리는 아닙니다.

기택은 지하층의 문광과 근세에게도 자비를 베풀지 않았죠.

톨스토이의 단편집 ‘촛불’에서 농노 출신 관리자가 오히려 농민들을 더 괴롭히고 권력을 행사하는 것과 같아요. 어느 계층도 자신의 영역의 선을 넘어오는 것을 경계하기는 마찬가지인가 봅니다. 자신도 모르게 함께 공생하고 있으면서도 선을 넘지 못하게 경계하는 모습이 우스꽝스럽네요. 

이 영화에는 우리사회에서 야기되는 반기업적인 정서, 부자에 대한 환멸에 대해 질문합니다.

왜 그들을 미워하는가?

이 영화에서는 말합니다.

가난이 죄가 아니듯 부자 역시 죄가 아니라는걸. 오히려 박사장의 부인 연교가 사람을 의심하지 않고 단순하고 착한 인물로 묘사되고, 딸 다혜 역시 때묻지 않고 순수한 면을 보여주고 있죠. 어린 아이 다송이의 생일 잔치를 뭘 그리 요란하게 할 수 있냐고 사람들이 욕할 수 있습니다.

하지만 이 영화에서 다송이가 자신의 생일날 지하실의 근세를 보고 유령으로 여겨 심한 트라우마를 겪었음을 알게 되죠.

아들의 정신적 충격 때문에 박사장네 가족들이 다송의 생일날 캠프를 가고, 요란한 생일 잔치를 하는지 그제서야 우리들은 요란함의 그 실체를 이해하게 됩니다.

기택네집 가족들에게 냄새가 난다고 말하는 다송과 박사장 역시 그들의 반지하실 환경을 알지 못합니다.

그래서 그들에게서 나는 냄새가 불쾌할 수 있었죠.  이 영화는 빈부 격차로 인한 갈등의 원인이 단지 경제적 격차라기 보다 서로 이해와 공감의 부족임을 상기시켜주고 있습니다.

올라갈 수 없는 불평등 사다리 

‘기생충’은 계층간 분리를 나타내는 서로 다른 집단들간의 구조화된 불평등을 계단으로 나타내고 있습니다.

은퇴 후 차린 치킨 집과 대만 카스텔라점이 망한 후 대리기사를 하던 기택과 똑같이 대만 카스텔라점으로 파산해서 빚더미로 숨어사는 근세는 실은 같은 처지인 셈이죠.

원래 중간계층으로 빚으로 하강 이동한 경우로 보입니다.

실제로 우리사회 중년의 명퇴자들이 퇴직금을 모아 차린 대왕 카스텔라점은 어느 날 ‘그 촉촉함의 비밀’이란 방송이 나가자마자 바로 폭삭 망했어요.

이 사건은 가난이 오로지 그들만의 무능이 아님을 말해주고 있죠. 갑작스러운 사건으로 회복될 수 없는 지하실 계단으로 내려가게 되는 영화 속 이야기가 실제 우리사회에서 일어나고 있는 현실이니까요. 하지만 한 번 바닥으로 내려가면 전반적인 ‘생애 기회’ 가 다시 오지 않음을 말해주고 있습니다. 근세나 기택 모두 그러한 현실에 순응하고 오히려 편안함을 느끼게 되죠. 현재 우리나라 사회 어디서나 볼 수 있는 자영업에 손대는 중년의 초라한 모습입니다. 이 영화는 그들이 상향적 사회이동이 불가함과 동시에 자녀들 또한 세대간 상승 이동이 더욱 힘들어짐을 암시하고 있습니다.

한 번 떨어지면 올라갈 수 없는 계층 사다리. ‘기생충’은 우리 사회가 기회의 불평등 사회임을 결론내리고 있습니다.

위조와 위선의 거짓 사회

불평등의 간극을 좁혀주는 역할로 기우의 친구 민혁이 등장합니다. 문서위조를 시켜 가짜 명문대 대학생으로 과외선생 사기극을 벌이는 일이었죠. 설마 이런 일이 있을 수 있을까?하는 생각이 들지만, 이미 우리사회 특권층의 사문서 및 학력 위조 사기는 실제로 우리 사회 현실의 민낯이죠. 

로이터는  '한국의 뿌리 깊은 사회적 분열을 반영한 영화 기생충'이라는 제목의 기사에서 "영화 속 등장인물이 부잣집 과외 교사가 되기 위해 학위를 위조하는 장면은 최근 한국에서 발생한 '조국 전 법무부 장관의 스캔들'을 연상시킨다"고 보도했으니까요. 

하지만 가지지 못한 사람들의 거짓과 사기는 특권층의 그것과 달리 상승이동이 불가능함과 동시에 공멸임을 말해주고 있어요.

기우가 마지막 돈을 많이 벌어 이 집을 사겠다는 말을 진짜로 공감하는 사람은 없으니까요. 그리고 아들 덕에 기택이 계단을 올라올 수 있을지 아무도 믿지 않죠. 그래서 이 영화를 보고 나면 씁쓸합니다.

가난하다고 직업이 없다고해서 대부분의 사람들은 위조나 거짓 행세를 하지 않아요. 노력없이 누군가의 속삭임을 통한 거짓과 위선은 파멸을 이끈다는 교훈을 주고 있습니다.

누가 기생충인가?

기생충이란 다른 동물체에 붙어서 양분을 빨아 먹고 사는 벌레지만, 기생충은 자신의 분수를 알아서 언제나 먹을 만큼만 먹고 뚱뚱하게 되지는 않는다고 하는군요.

기생충은 스스로 노력하지 않고 남에게 덧붙어서 살아가는 사람을 얕잡아 이르는 말로 쓰이고 있어요.

올바른 방법으로 노력하지 않고 박사장의 집에 속임수로 전원 취업한 기택네 가족, 음식물을 몰래 훔쳐 먹고 숨어사는 지하실방의 근세, 모두 우리 사회에서 보여지는 실제 현실입니다.

“ 그냥 여기서 이대로 살면 어떨까?” 세상과의 도전보다는 안정을 추구하고, 젊어서의 고생보다는 편안함을 유혹하는 현재 우리 사회의 실체입니다. 기택과 근세는 자발적으로 일을 안하려는 것이 아니라 마땅한 일자리가 없는 탓에 백수가 된 셈이죠.

이 영화는 우리가 그들을 기생충이라고 부를 수 있을까?라고 질문합니다. 숙주로서의 박사장 가족에게 기택 식구는 쫒아내야 할 기생충이 아니었지요.

그들은 대신 운전을 해주고, 음식과 집안 일을 도맡아주고, 아이들 공부를 돌보아주는 공생관계였습니다. 박사장네 가족은 노동의 대가를 지불하지만 그들의 수고를 의지하는 사이였으니까요. 

엄마 뱃속의 태아나 취업준비로 부모 집에 있는 자녀, 결혼을 미루는 성인들 모두 그들을 기생충으로 부르지 않으니까요. 이 영화에서는 우리 모두 이 세상에서 특정기간 기생충이 될 수 있다는 사실을 일깨워주고 있죠.  

우리 사회에서 누군가의 건강과 성장에 해를 끼치는 기생충은 단지 기택과 근세가족 뿐일까요?

영화 기생충은 숨어서 몰래 남에게 해악을 끼치는 사람들에게 던지는 경종인지 모릅니다.

실제로 봉준호 감독은 감독 생활 중 생활고를 겪기도 했다고 전해집니다.

그는 플란더스의 개’의 흥행 실패로 위기에 처했지만, 봉준호 감독의 재능을 믿은 차승재 대표가 다시 기회를 줬고, 이때 연출한 영화가 ‘살인의 추억’이죠.

이 영화의 흥행 성공으로 봉준호 감독은 대중적으로 널리 알려지게 됩니다.

‘기생충’이 아카데미 작품상 수상 이후 ‘포춘’지는 기생충의 투자와 배급을 맡은 CJ의 재정적 지원에 주목했습니다. 봉준호 감독의 실제 성공이 그의 실력과 도전 그리고 기업의 협력적 지원으로 인한 결과물임을 보여주고 있네요. 우리는 아무리 내 지역의 ‘선’을 지키고 싶어도 이미 세상은 다양한 사람들과의 조화 속에 살아가는 원형사회입니다.

영화 ‘기생충’은 수직적인 사회가 아니라 원형적인 사회에서 반목은 결국 공멸이라는 것, 세상은 공생하기 위해 존재한다는 것을 일깨워주고 있습니다.

영화 1917이 1차세계대전 당시의 숨겨진 전쟁 영웅에 대한 오마주 영화라면, 기생충은 세계가 직면하는 빈부의 차로 인한 반목에 대한 경고입니다.

아카데미는 과거가 아닌 미래의 주제를 선택한 셈이죠.

다름에 대한 이해와 존중이 요구되는 갈등과 분열의 현재, 공생을 통한 동반자적 화합을 강조하는 숨겨진 글로벌 메시지가 바로 영화 ‘기생충’의 작품성입니다.

Today, let's take a look at Oscar's best film 'Parasite' of 2019.

The era of conflict due to the gap between the rich and the poor
The film Parasite carefully shows the difference between the rich and the poor seen in the capitalist era.

Bong-tail(Bong Joon Ho + Detail) stands out.
The poor is eating moldy bread,
Mr. Park's family puts Korean beef fillet in the japaguri.

There is the contrast between Kijung's eating dog jerky and the immense food of Dasong's birthday party.

In this film, Mr.Park is seen as an CEO of emerging wealthy IT company.

He's never seen the bad rich guy. He just hope they don't cross the line. But this is not just for the rich.

Kitaek's family did not show mercy to the Moonkwang and Gunsae in the basement.In Tolstoy's short story, 'Candlelight', it's more like a farmer manager is more tormenting farmers and exercising power.

The same is true of any hierarchy warn of crossing the line of its own realm.
It's ridiculous that even though  they  are symbiotic each other and they show tension in order for them not to cross the line.

This film asks about the anti-corporate emotions and disillusionment of the rich in our society.

Why do you hate them?
This movie answers.
Just as poverty is not a sin, a rich man is not a sin.

Rather, CEO Park's wife is described as a simple and kind person without any doubt
His daughter Dahye also shows pure and naive.
People may criticize at the rich how a child's birthday feast is so loud.
But in this movie, Dasong sees Gunsae living in the basement of his birthday, and sees it as a ghost, and it has become a severe trauma.

Because of his son's mental shock, his family went to camp on Dasong's birthday
After the story, we understand the reality of loudness for Dasong's birthday party.

Dasong and Mr Park are also unaware of Kitaek's semibasement environment. So their smell could be unpleasant for Mr Park's family.

The film reminds us that the cause of conflict due to the gap between rich and poor is not just an economic gap but a lack of understanding and empathy.

Inequality ladder
Parasites represent the structured inequalities between the different groups that represent hierarchical separation.

After Gitaek's retirement, he opened Chicken shop and the Taiwanese Castellan shop, Gunsae was the same as him.
It seems to have been a downward shift to debt originally from the middle class to the lower class.

 
Indeed, Taiwanese castella shop where , middle-aged retirees who gathered their retirement funds, immediately collapsed as soon as the broadcast 'The Secret of Moistness' was released.

This case tells us that poverty is not always their only inability.

The story in the movie that goes down the stairs of the basement, which cannot be recovered by a sudden incident, is actually happening in our society.

But once you get to the bottom, it's telling us that the overall 'life opportunity' is not coming back.

Both Gunsae and Kitaek adapt to the reality and feel comfortable.
It's a shabby middle-aged man who is currently working on self-employment that can be found anywhere in our society.

The film suggests that their upcoming social movements are not possible, and their children are also more difficult to move up to the upper level.

A ladder that cannot be climbed once dropped!
"Parasites" concludes that our society is an inequality society of opportunity.

False society of forgery and hypocrisy
Kiwoo's friend Minhyuk appears to perform a role to  bridge the gap between inequality.

Forgery of the tutor was a fake college student who faked a document.
I wondered if this can happen in reality.

It is the fact that academic fraud happens in Korean society.

Reuters wrote in an article entitled "Film Parasites Reflecting Korea's Deep-rooted Social Division"

"The scene where the characters in the movie falsify their degrees in order to become a tutor

is reminiscent of the scandal of the former Attorney General  Jo-Kook in Korea. "

But the falsehoods and frauds of those who don't have say that, unlike the privileged ones, is not guaranteed to move up  and at the same time destroyed.

Nobody really believes that Kiwoo is going to buy the house with big money.
And nobody believes that his father can climb the stairs thanks to his son.
So it's bitter after watching this movie.

But most people don't fake or falsify in our society just because he or she is poor, and doesn't have a job.

The false and hypocrisy without effort according to someone's sweet lure leads to destruction. That is the lesson of the movie.

Who is the parasite?
Parasites are insects that feed on other animals,but it is said that they  live within their mean and do not eat enough to get fat.

Parasites are used to talk down to people who do not work on their own.

A family of four who have hired all of them to cheat at Mr.Park's house without trying the right way,

Gunsae of the cellar, where people steal food, hide is a reality that is seen in our society.

Why don't you just live here?” Seeking stability rather than challenging the world,it is the reality of our society that seduces comfort rather than suffering from youth.

Kitaek and Gunsae were unemployed, not because they didn't work voluntarily, but because they didn't have the right jobs. For the Mr. Park;s family as a host, the Kitaek 's family was not a parasite to be eradicated.

They were a symbiotic relationship with driving, taking care of food and housework, and caring for children's studies.
Mr. Park's family pays for the labor, but the family members have relied on them.

All of the fetuses in the mother's womb, the children in their parents' homes for employment, and the adults who postpone marriage are not called parasites.

This film reminds us that we can all be parasites in this world for a certain period of time.
Are the only Kitaek's family and Gunsae that harm someone's health and growth in our society?

Movie parasites may raise the alarm at people who secretly do harm to others in our society.
In fact, Bong Joon-ho is said to have suffered life during his movie director career.

He was on the brink of Flanders' dog failure,but CEO Cha Seung-jae, who believes in Bong Joon-ho's talent, gave me a chance.
The next film's success has made Bong Jun-ho popularly known.

After the Parasite won the Academy Award, Fortune magazine paid attention to CJ's financial support for investing and distributing parasites.
Bong Joon-ho's real success is the result of his talents, challenges and corporate support.

No matter how we alert to protect our region, the world is already a cyclical society that lives in harmony with various people.

The film 'parasite' reminds us that in the cyclical society, not the vertical society, the antagonism is eventually destruction, and that the world exists for symbiosis.

If movie "1917" is a homage to the hidden war heroes of World WarI, "Parasites" are warnings of antagonism caused by the difference between the rich and the poor facing the world.

The academy chose a topic of the future, not the past.
The hidden global message emphasizing companionship through symbiosis is the Oscar's choice of the best film 'parasite', which requires the understanding and respect of different layers of people.
