제 어린 시절의 추억 안에는 디즈니 만화 영화가 존재합니다. 커다란 뾰족한 성 위에 불꽃 폭죽이 터지면서 시작되는 그 타이틀 음악은 아직도 따라 부를 수 있으니까요. 물질적 여유가 없던 그 시절, 아이들과 어른들의 정신적 문명화에 커다란 영향을 끼친 사람은 바로 월트 디즈니입니다.

잭 자이프스의 “동화의 정체” 첫 장에 쓰여진 글이죠.

“아동 동화는 보편적이고, 시대를 초월해 있으며, 불안을 치유할 뿐 아니라 마법적이고 아름답다. 이것이 우리 시대의 동화가 지니고 있는 모습이다.”

잭 자이프스는 디즈니가 그림 형제의 가치관을 답습하는 완벽한 제자라고 서술했죠. 반면 오스카 와일드는 안데르센 동화의 메시지를 ‘초월’ 보다 시대에 맞추어 ‘전복’하고자 했어요. 근래 들어 디즈니사는 안데르센의 ‘눈의 여왕’을 각색한 ‘겨울왕국’을 출시하여 시공초월의 동화에서 보편적 진리를 거부하는 여성관의 전복을 시도하고 있습니다. 자, 그러면 지금부터 저와 함께 디즈니 영화 속 공주 변천사 여행을 시작해 보실까요?

<백설공주와 일곱 난쟁이>(1937)의 백설공주는 현재와는 다른 미인상을 보여주고 있죠. 약간은 통통한 체격, 동그란 얼굴에 커다란 선한 눈을 가진 누가 봐도 착한 이미지의 전형적인 공주상입니다. 흰 피부에 입술이 붉으며 머리가 검은 백설공주는 순수하고 순진한 모습의 여성으로서의 고전적 미의 표준을 대변하고 있어요.

<잠자는 숲 속의 공주>(1959)의 오로라 공주는 금발에 갸름한 얼굴, 가냘픈 허리에 키가 크고 마른 몸매 가장 서구적인 미인상을 보여주고 있죠. “햇살처럼 찬란하고 부드럽게 물결치는 금빛 머릿결, 빛나는 보랏빛 눈동자, 약간 홍조가 돋는 붉은 피부, 장미에게 부끄러움을 안길 정도로 붉은 입술..” 악역인 말레피센트 말처럼 누가 봐도 굉장히 아름다운 치명적인 미를 자랑하는 공주로 묘사되어 있어요. 아름답지만 어딘가 가련해 보이는 오로라 공주 모습입니다.

21세기로 넘어와 <라푼젤>(2010)은 동그란 얼굴에 약간의 주근깨와 함께 홍조가 도는 창백한 듯 연한 피부, 크고 동그란 밝은 녹색 눈, 톡 튀어나온 귀여운 토끼 이빨, 마지막으로 장난기 넘치는 미소를 가졌죠. 라푼젤은 기존의 정석적인 미의 기준에서 벗어나 귀여운 외모로 그려지고 있습니다. 밝고 활달한 건강미를 보여주고 있는 라푼젤의 모습입니다.

<겨울왕국>(2014)의 엘사는 키가 크고 날씬하며 장밋빛 뺨과 백금발에 보라색 푸른 눈을 가진 상당히 도회적인 세련됨을 가진 공주의 이미지를 보여주고 있어요. 엘사의 가늘고 긴 눈썹은 조용하고 차분한 성격을 뜻하며, 얇은 입술은 강한 자기 주관을 보여주고 있다고 할까요? 세련된 강인함, 현시대를 살아가고 있는 여성들이 선호하는 이미지를 보여주고 있는 엘사!, Hmmmm, 걸크러쉬로 새롭게 태어난 디즈니 공주에 사람들이 열광하는 이유죠.

백설공주는 순진하고 착한 성격으로 묘사되고 있죠. 처음 보는 난쟁이들과도 잘 어울리는 성격 좋은 백설공주는 시대가 요구하는 현모양처의 모습을 잘 보여주고 있어요. 난쟁이들의 오두막에 기거하게 된 백설공주는 기꺼이 청소와 음식을 하며 집안일을 거들죠. 

오로라 공주는 주인공이지만 활약은 잠자는 역할일 수밖에 없죠. 16세 생일날 호기심에 다가갔다가 물레에 찔려 영원한 잠에 빠지고 마니까요. 오로지 백마 탄 왕자님을 통해서만이 자기 회복과 영원한 행복이 가능해지는 가장 수동적이고 피동적인 공주상을 보여주고 있습니다. 

20세기의 백설공주와 오로라 공주는 착하고 순진하여 남의 꾀임에 잘 빠지고 누군가의 음모를 당하는 약간은 어리숙한 성격으로 묘사될 수 있겠지요. 자기주도적으로 자신의 인생을 개척하기 보다 누군가의 도움이 필요한 소극적인 성격입니다. 환상적인 왕자님의 출현으로 인해 자신의 행복이 결정되는 순응하고 살아가는 전형적인 과거의 여성상이라고 해야 되겠어요.

반면에 라푼젤은 기존의 공주와는 확연히 달라진 이미지를 보여주고 있습니다. 백설공주처럼 집안 일을 하지만 이는 남자들을 위함이 아닌 자기 자신을 위한 가사노동으로 스스로 혼자 지내는 삶을 극복하기 위한 자구책인 셈이죠. 순진하고 소녀같은 감성의 라푼젤은 때론 왈가닥으로 변신하여 후라이팬을 들고 공격하는 용감한 여성으로 과감함을 보여줍니다. 밝고 긍정적인 성격으로 모든 문제를 스스로 해결하는 적극성이 바로 라푼젤의 매력입니다.

‘겨울왕국’의 엘사가 디즈니 영화에서 각광받는 이유 중 하나는 남자 캐릭터에 의해 존재가 좌우되지 않는 유일한 공주라는 점입니다. 자신이 가지고 있는 힘이 동생 안나에게 해를 끼칠까봐 전전긍긍하는 소심함을 보여주지만, 누군가에게 의지하지 않고 새로운 세상을 향한 홀로서기의 강인함을 보여줍니다. 엘사는 ”렛잇고”의 노래말처럼 여성, 여왕, 착한 사람 신드롬에서 벗어나 오로지 자기 자신의 정체성과 마주한 채 현대인에게 주어진 각종 규칙과 통제 속에서 ‘자유’를 선언합니다. 선하고 책임감 있는 강인한 자유 여성 엘사! 기존의 디즈니 영화에서 보지 못한 쉬크한 공주 캐릭터이죠.

백설공주와 오로라 공주의 꿈은 환상적인 백마 탄 왕자와 결혼하여 영원히 행복하게 사는 거죠. 보수적 수동성으로 오로지 기다림의 인내와 아름다운 외모가 바로 그들의 능력입니다. 백설공주는 난쟁이들에 의해, 오로라 공주는 요정들에 의해 보호받는 무력한 존재입니다.

라푼젤은 일단 다재다능합니다. 각종 집안 일에 춤과 그림 실력, 험상궂은 사내들도 꿈 이야기로 포섭해 친구가 되고, 고지식한 말 맥시머스를 순식간에 달래는 친화력, 싸움에서의 전투력, 위기 상황에서 용감하게 대처하는 문제해결능력이 돋보입니다. 백설공주와 오로라 공주와 달리 라푼젤 자체가 신비한 능력을 보유하고 있어요. 황금빛 꽃의 힘이 그의 머리카락 속에 스며들어가 마법의 치유 능력을 가지고 있죠. 공주에게 주어진 치유 능력은 마치 간호사처럼 여성의 온화함을 상징합니다. 라푼젤은 기존의 공주에 비해 현명한 캐릭터입니다만, 애착동물 카멜레온 파스칼의 도움을 받습니다. 공주의 불완전한 능력을 나타내고 있다고 할까요?

겨울왕국”의 엘사는 선천적으로 마법을 가지고 태어났으며 눈과 얼음을 자유자재로 만들고 조종하는 냉기에 특화된 능력을 가지고 있습니다. 계절 변화, 얼음성 건축, 괴물 만들기 등 거의 전지전능급이죠. 게다가 작중 최후반부에서 진정한 사랑이 저주를 푼다는 말에 힌트를 얻어 사랑의 힘까지 더하자, 왕국 전체를 뒤덮은 눈과 얼음을 녹이고, 침몰한 배를 복구시키는 능력을 보입니다. 

라푼젤의 치유 능력과 비교한다면, 엘사는 창조적인 힘을 선천적으로 지닌 셈이죠. 어느 누구의 도움도 받지 않는 완전체의 능력자 엘사입니다. 자신의 힘을 거침없이 사용하지만 소중한 사람을 위험에 빠뜨리는데 두려움을 느끼게 되죠. 자신의 힘을 숨기다가 결국 올바른 사용법을 배우게 된다는 설정에서, 엑스맨, 스파이더맨과 같은 슈퍼 히어로물과 유사점을 찾는 시각도 있습니다.

선왕의 선박사고 후 어쩌면 이러한 능력 때문에 동생 안나와의 권력 경쟁 구도 없이 아렌델의 여왕이 되었는지도 모릅니다. 자신의 능력으로 다른 사람을 다치게 하는 상황에 직면하게 된 엘사는 바로 자신의 마법을 진실한 사랑의 힘으로 녹일 수 있다는 것을 깨닫게 됩니다. 겨울왕국의 엘사를 통해 여성도 선천적으로 능력이 있으며 실력주의에 의해 여왕이 될 수 있다는 점이 부각되고 있어요. 성차별적 고정관념을 탈피시키고 성평등적 사고를 고취시킨다는 점에서 상당히 의의가 있는 캐릭터입니다.

백설공주와 오로라 공주에게 인생에서 중요한 것은 바로 남녀 간의 사랑입니다. 그들의 배우자 자격은 평민이 아닌 왕자님이죠. 독이 든 사과를 베어 먹고 유리관 위에 누워있는 백설공주에게 왕자는 다가가서 입맞춤 합니다. 왕자의 입맞춤이 진정한 사랑이며 유일한 해독제인 셈이죠. 새로운 생명을 불어넣어준 은인이구요. 마지막 장면 왕자는 백설공주를 품에 안고 백마에 태워 자신의 황금 궁전으로 향합니다. 이로써 백설공주는 왕자의 권력과 재산으로 영원히 부귀영화를 누린 것으로 상상하게 만들죠. 

오로라 공주 역시 자신의 실수로 물레에 손을 찔린 후 100년의 깊은 잠에 빠집니다. 100년이 지난 후 근처를 지나가던 한 왕자가 소문을 듣고 성을 찾아왔고, 그는 성으로 들어가 공주에게 입을 맞추죠. 잠에서 깨어난 공주는 왕자와 결혼해 행복하게 살았다고 하는데 글쎄요, 실제로 모르는 남자와의 한 번의 입맞춤으로 맺어진 결혼생활이 행복했을까요? 역시 오로라공주는 왕자가 입맞춤하러 오기 전까지는 활동할 수 없는 불완전한 존재였던 겁니다. 상당히 가부장적인 사고가 만연한 시대의 여성상이기 때문에 왕자의 힘이 막강합니다. 왕자에게 택함을 받는 일이 공주의 운명인 셈이구요. 이왕이면 잘 생기고 마음 좋고 재력 좋은 왕자가 입맞춤해주기를 기다리는 숙명이 이 시대가 보여주는 공주의 무기력한 애정관을 보여주고 있습니다

말괄량이 공주 라푼젤의 상대역은 권력과 재력의 왕자가 아닙니다. 오히려 도둑으로 현상수배가 된 플린으로 평민이죠. 라푼젤은 그의 본명 유진의 진실된 모습을 보면서 서서히 사랑에 빠지게 되지요. 라푼젤은 기존의 공주처럼 사랑에 수동적이지 않습니다. 라푼젤이 자신의 꿈이었다는 유진의 말에 자신의 꿈도 유진이었다고 고백해요. 유진이 사망하나 싶더니 라푼젤이 흘린 눈물에 의해 기적적으로 깨어납니다. 죽음을 맞이한 백설공주가 왕자님의 입맞춤으로 환생된 것과 반대로 이제는 공주가 자신의 배우자를 구원해주고 있습니다. 달라진 여성관의 시대적 변천을 느낄 수 있네요.

“겨울왕국’의 엘사는 정말 유일하게 이성과의 로맨스가 그려져 있지 않죠. 동생 안나와 달리 영화 마지막까지 싱글인 채로 남아있어요. 엘사는 기존의 공주들처럼 이성과의 사랑보다 자기애, 자매애, 조국애 이처럼 보다 지도자가 갖추어야 할 인류애를 품고 있다고 할까요? 아름다운 공주가 배우자를 만나 행복하게 살았다는 동화적인 캐릭터에서 자신의 능력을 원대하게 발휘하여 세상을 구하는 보다 신화적인 영웅 캐릭터로 그려지고 있어요. 그래서 엘사는 작품 초기에 바로 여왕이 됩니다.

안나는 자신의 희생으로 나타난 진정한 사랑의 힘으로 소생하고 자매는 감격의 포옹을 합니다. “겨울왕국’은 기존의 공주시리즈에서 주입되어 온 진정한 사랑이란 이성에 의한 진실된 구애라는 선입견에 대해 반기를 듭니다. 같은 여성 그리고 자매와의 진정한 사랑이 이성간의 사랑 못지않음을 나타내고 있으니까요. 엘사의 애정관은 앞으로 또 어떻게 원대하게 변화 발전될지 궁금해집니다.

 

만화 영화에서 공주를 비현실적으로 묘사한다는 비판을 받은 디즈니사는 시대상을 반영한 새로운 공주상을 제시할 것이라고 말해왔습니다. 앞으로 외모보다는 인격에 초점을 맞춰 다양성을 포용하는 인물로 공주를 그릴 것이라고 했죠. 

정직하며 신뢰할 수 있는 친구가 될 것, 자신을 믿을 것, 옳지 못한 것을 바로 세울 것, 최선을 다할 것, 충직하면서 헌신적일 것, 절대 포기하지 말 것 디즈니가 이 시대 공주가 지녀야 할 덕목으로 내세운 항목입니다.

완벽한 외모의 공주가 잘생긴 왕자와 결혼하는 전형적인 디즈니 식 '해피엔딩'은 이제 디즈니 애니메이션에서 보기 어려울 수도 있습니다. 시대가 달라지면서 디즈니 공주 역시 새로운 여성상으로 진화하고 있습니다.

자, 오늘의 메시지입니다.

월트 디즈니는 꿈을 실현할 수 있는 비결로 호기심, 자신감, 일관성을 꼽았습니다. 이 중에서 제일 중요한 것은 자신감이라고 말했죠.

“이제 내가 뭘 할 수 있는지 알아볼 때야 

한계를 시험하고 그걸 넘어서겠어. 

내겐 옳은 것도, 그른 것도, 규칙도 없어. 

나는 자유야!”

“Children's fairy tales are universal, timeless, healing anxiety, magical and beautiful. This is what fairy tales of our time have. ”

Jack Zipes described Disney as the perfect disciple of the Grimm's story values. Oscar Wilde, on the other hand, wanted to overthrow the Andersen fairy tale's message in time, rather than transcendence. In recent years, Walt Disney Pictures has launched “Frozen”, an adaptation of Andersen's “Snow Queen”, attempting to overthrow the view of women who reject universal truth in fairy tales that transcend time and space. Now, then, can you start traveling with me on the princess history in the Disney movies?

Snow White in “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)” shows a different beauty compared to these days. It is a typical princess with a slightly chubby physique, a round face with white skin, red lips, and black-haired. Snow White represents the standard of classical beauty as a pure and innocent woman.

Entering into the 21st century, “Tangled (2010)” Rapunzel has a round face with some freckles, pale skin with reddish, large, bright green eyes, popping cute rabbit teeth, and a playful smile. Rapunzel is not drawn from the traditional standard of beauty and but a cute appearance. Rapunzel has a bright and vibrant healthy beauty.v

Elsa in “Frozen (2014)” shows an image of a princess with a tall, slender, fairly urbane chic with rosy cheeks and purple-blue eyes. Elsa's long, thin eyebrows represents a quiet and calm character, and her thin lips shows strong self-control. 

Her image shows her sophisticated toughness that women like to live in these days. Hmmmm, New girl crush character is newly born in Disney princesses stories and why Elsa is loved by young generation.

Snow White is described as a naive and kind personality. She who goes well together with dwarfs is showing the image of submissive house wife. Snow White, who lives in a dwarf's hut, is willing to clean, cook and help with household chores.

Princess Aurora is the main character, but her role is to sleep. On her 16th birthday, and she is stabbed by a spinning wheel and falls into eternal sleep. Only Prince with white horse makes her heal and be happy. She shows the most passive and submissive princess image.

Snow White and Princess Aurora of the 20th century can be described as a bit silly because they are kind and naive, engrossed by others and conspired by someone. It's a passive personality that needs someone's help rather than self-initiating their own life. It should be said that this is a typical female figure of the past, whose happiness is determined by the appearance of a fantastic prince.

Rapunzel shows a distinctly different image from the existing princess. Snow White works for others, but this is a self-rescue to overcome her own life routine by doing housework for herself, not for men. The naive, girlish tangled rapunzel is sometimes bold as a brave woman who turns into a strand and attacks with a frying pan. Rapunzel's charm is its aggressiveness to solve all problems on a bright and positive nature.

One of the reasons why Elsa in “Frozen” is spotlighted in Disney movies is that it is the only princess whose presence is not determined by male characters. She shows her timidity that her magic will hurt her younger sister Anna, but she does not rely on anyone but shows her freedom and loneliness through solitude. Elsa, like song of the words of “Let it Go”, frees women, queens, and good people's syndromes, and declares freedom in the control of rules and frameworks given to modern people, facing only their own identity. Good, responsible, strong free woman Elsa ! She is a chic and cool princess character we’ve never seen before in  Disney movies.

The dream of Snow White and Princess Aurora is to marry a fantastic prince and live happily ever after. With conservative passiveness, patience and beautiful appearance of waiting are their abilities. Snow White is protected by the dwarves and Princess Aurora by the fairies.

Rapunzel is versatile. She in talented in dancing, painting, becoming friends, and the affinity to soothe old-fashioned horses Maximus, the fighting power in battle, and the problem-solving ability to cope bravely in crisis situations. Unlike Snow White and Princess Aurora, Rapunzel herself possesses mysterious powers. The power of the golden flower penetrates into her hair and has magical healing powers. The healing power given to the princess, like a nurse, symbolizes the gentleness of a woman. Rapunzel is a smarter character than the previous princess, but with the help of the attached animal, chameleon Pascal. It seems to represent the princess's imperfect abilities?

Elsa of "Frozen" was born with magic and possesses a special ability to cool and manipulate snow and ice freely. Seasonal changes, ice building, monster making, almost omnipotence. In addition, at the end of the scene, when the hint of true love is cursing, she adds the power of love, demonstrating the ability to melt the snow and ice that covered the whole kingdom, and to restore the sunken ship.

Compared with Rapunzel's healing powers, Elsa is born with creative power. It is Elsa, the perfecting power, without anyone's help. She uses herr power unrelentingly but is afraid to endanger her loved ones. In a setting that hides its power and eventually learns how to use it, some people find similarities with superheroes like X-Men and Spider-Man.

Perhaps this ability made her the queen of Arendel after the king's accident without competing for power with her sister Anna. Faced with a situation in which her power hurts others, Elsa realizes that she can melt her magic with the power of true love. Through Elsa in the Frozen Kingdom, women are inherently capable and able to become queens by their ability. This character is quite meaningful in that it breaks out gender-based stereotypes and inspires gender equality.

For Snow White and Princess Aurora, the important thing in life is hetero-sexual love. Their spouse status is not a commoner but a prince. The prince approaches and kisses Snow White, who ate a poisoned apple and lying on a glass tube. A prince's kiss is true love and the only antidote. It is a person who gave new life. In the final scene, the prince takes Snow White, rides it on a white horse, and heads for his golden palace. It is thus imagined that Snow White enjoyed forever with the power and property of the prince.

Princess Aurora also falls asleep for 100 years after being accidentally stuck in the wheel. One hundred years later, a prince who passed by heard a rumor and visited the castle, and he enters the castle and kisses the princess.  I am wondering that the princess who married a prince without knowing each other lived happily ever after. Also, princess Aurora was imperfect until the prince came to kiss. The prince is powerful because it is a feminine figure in a period of considerable patriarchal thinking. It is also the princess's destiny to be chosen by a prince. Just as she is waiting for a handsome, hearted and talented prince to kiss her, this is the princess's helpless affection.

Tomboy Rapunzel's marital partner is not a prince of power and wealth. Rather, wanted to be a thief, Flynn. Rapunzel slowly falls in love as she sees his true name, Eugene. Rapunzel is not as passive in love as a traditional princess. Eugene says that Rapunzel was her dream and she also confesses her love. When Eugene is about to die, and he is miraculously awakened by her tears. Unlike Snow White, who died, she was reborn by a prince's kiss, and now the princess is saving her lover. We can feel the change of the times of the changed view of women.

Only Elsa in “Frozen” in Disney princess stories does not have the romance of the opposite sex. Unlike her sister Anna, she remains single until the end of the movie. Does Elsa have the kind of humanity that a leader should have more than love with the opposite sex like the princesses? Elsa is depicted not a fairy tale character who met her spouse and lived happily ever after, but a more mythical hero character who saves the world by using her power. That's why Elsa has a queen crown right from the start.

Being criticized for unrealistic depiction of a princess in an animated film, Disney has said it will present a new princess image that reflects the times. In the future, Disney promises to draw a princess with a character that embraces diversity, focusing on personality rather than appearance.

Being an honest and trustworthy friend, believing in yourself, building the right things right, doing your best, being loyal and dedicated, never giving up is what Disney has to do with princess right images.

A typical Disney 'Happy Ending' where a perfect-looking princess marries a handsome prince may now be hard to see in Disney animations. As times change, Disney princesses are also evolving into new women characters.
