[팔로워십Followership]신입사원의 Must-see movie “악마는 프라다를 입는다”(ENG “The Devil Wears Prada” review)

국내 유통업계 최장수 최고경영자인 전 홈플러스 이승한회장은 훗날 CEO재목감이라고 판단되는 직원에 대해 다음과 같이 언급했습니다.

“허드렛일을 잘하는 사람입니다. 하찮은 일이라도 최선을 다하고 다른 사람을 배려하는 사람은 반드시 눈에 들어오기 마련입니다.”

내가 가고 싶어하는 기업만 생각하지 말고 반대로 나는 과연 회사가 좋아할 만한 사원일까? 한 번 생각해 보세요.

자 오늘은 영화 “악마는 프라다를 입는다”에서 보여지는 신입사원의 자세에 대해 살펴보겠습니다.

첫번째, 겸손(Humble mind)

앤디는 자신이 원하는 언론기관 취업에 실패한 채 런웨이 잡지사 편집장 비서 면접 요청을 받습니다. 그는 당연히 런웨이 패션잡지에 관심이 없죠. 아무런 준비와 조사도 없이 인터뷰에 응합니다. 최소한 자신을 비서로 쓰는 편집장에 대한 조사도 없이 말이죠. 사회초년생 앤디에게 필요한 것은 겸손입니다. 그는 저널리스트는 고차원적 엘리트 직업군으로 생각하고, 패션 분야를 허영으로 여기면서 보다 낮은 지적 수준의 직업군으로 여기고 있는 듯 보여요. 런웨이에 입사할 준비가 전혀 되어 있지 않군요. 아무리 자신이 원하는 직업군이 아닌 분야에 응시할 때조차도 잊지 마세요. 나의 면접 기회조차 부러워하는 사람이 있다는 걸요. 미란다의 비서직이 백 만대 일의 기회라면 그 기회는 반드시 훗날 좋은 스펙이 된다는 사실도 말입니다

사회초년생이 가져야 할 첫번째, 나를 불러주는 기업과 담당자에 대해서는 반드시 철저하게 사전 조사할 것. 그리고 1년 아니 잠시 스쳐 지나가는 상사와 회사일지 언정 자신을 불러 줌에 감사하고 겸손하십시요.

두번째, 최선(Best)

앤디는 까다롭고 심술궂은 편집장 미란다로 인해 비서 업무가 만만치 않죠. 나이젤에게 가서 미란다가 자신을 싫어한다고 한껏 불평을 쏟아냅니다. 최소한 노력한 만큼은 보상받고 싶다고 하자, 나이젤은 솔직해지자고 하면서 앤디에게 징징거리지말라고 조언해 줍니다. 런웨이 잡지사 일은 나이젤에게 삶의 일부를 창조하는 예술로 단순히 잡지책이 아닌 희망의 등불이었다고 말해주죠. 앤디는 깨닫기 시작합니다. 자신은 런웨이를 위해 최선을 다할 준비조차 하지 않았다는 잘못을요. 자신이 잠시 머물고 있는 이 곳이 누군가에게는 꿈의 직장이란 사실을 말입니다.

우리는 최선을 다했다는 말을 참 쉽게 하는 경향이 있어요. 최선이란 온 정성과 힘을 다했다는 뜻이죠. 앞으로 더 투자할 정성과 힘이 남아있지 않다는 뜻입니다.나는 최선을 다했는데 상사가 인정을 해주지 않는다고 불평하기보다 업무 파악 계획을 세우고 배우려는 자세를 취하세요. 사회초년생이 가져야 할 두번째, 최선을 다했다는 말을 쉽게 하지 마세요. 상사를 바꾸려 하기 보다 자신을 변화시키는 것이 최선의 길일 겁니다. 

세번째: 인맥(Networking)

미란다는 앤디에게 미출판 해리포터 원고를 자신의 쌍둥이 딸에게 가져다주라고 합니다. Wow~ 미출판 원고 게다가 해리포터를 구하라구요? 정말 난감한 주문이네요.

앤디는 미란다 심부름을 갔다가 만난 유명 작가 크리스찬 톰슨이 생각납니다.

 그의 도움으로 해리포터 미출판원고를 구해내고 말죠. 미란다는 앤디의 능력에 깜짝 놀랍니다. 앤디의 자신감은 바로 그의 인맥관리 덕분입니다. 우연히 알게 된 사람을 소중한 인연으로 만드는 일이 중요한 이유는 사회 초년생 시절 절대로 알 수 없는 귀중한 정보를 얻을 수 있기 때문이죠. 사회초년생이 가져야 할 세번째, 인맥관리도 실력입니다.

네번째,  팔로워십(Followership)

앤디는 파티석상에서 주요 인물의 이름을 기억해내서 위기상황을 넘깁니다. 동료 에밀리를 동시에 구해주는 일이기도 했구요.

에밀리 대신 파리에 가게 된 앤디는 미란다가 런웨이에서 축출되고 쟈클린이 편집장이 되리라는 정보를 듣게 되죠. 하지만 미란다가 그리 어수룩한 인물이 아닙니다. 자신의 위치를 확고히 하기 위해 리스트를 준비하고 쟈클린을 새로운 파트너로 영입합니다. 미란다는 자신을 위해 정보를 알려주려고 동분서주한 앤디에게 감동했다고 말합니다. 이처럼 앤디는 시키는 일만 하는  불평투성이 신입사원에서 문제를 해결하고 소신을 가지고 상사를 한결같이 돕는 능력자로 바뀌어져 있어요. 요시다 덴세는 진정한 팔로워란 주어진 역할에 충실하려는 ‘공헌력’과 자신의 사고를 토대로 행동하려는 ‘비판력’을 갖춘 자라고 말합니다. 앤디에게서 진정한 팔로워의 모습이 보이네요. 사회초년생이 가져야 할 마지막 태도, 시키지 않아도 알아서 일을 찾아서 처리하는 팔로워십입니다.

대부분의 사람들은 혹독하게 일을 시키는 상사를 싫어하죠. 미란다처럼 괴팍하고 완벽주의자 상사를 만나면 상당히 곤혹스러울겁니다. 앤디는 미란다처럼 살기보다 자신의 꿈을 찾기로 결심하죠 그런데 잘 생각해보세요. 앤디가 그렇게 원하던 신문사 기자 인터뷰에서 채용될 수 있었던 것은 미란다가 편집장에게 보낸 친필 팩스 덕분입니다. 미란다는 앤디를 위해 약식 추천서를 써 준 셈이죠. 그 이유는 앤디가 일을 제대로 했기 때문입니다. 여러분을 자신 있게 보증한다고 추천해 줄 상사 한 명쯤은 반드시 만드시길 바랍니다.

신입사원 시절 가혹하게 일을 시킨 상사에게 오히려 감사하세요. 사회 초년생 시절 제대로 일을 배우게 된 셈이니까요. 보잘것없는 하찮은 일도 더 잘하는 프로가 있습니다. 복사하고 정리하는 일에도 상급과 하급이 있어요. 나의 스펙으로 이런 일을 하냐고 불평하는 사원이 있는 반면에 늘 배우는 자세로 임하는 긍정적인 신입사원이 있습니다. 

자, 오늘의 메시지입니다.

불교에서는 “학생이 배울 준비를 마치면 스승이 나타난다”는 말이 있죠. 팔로워십에 충실할 때 비로소 누군가가 여러분을 들어서 더 높은 곳으로 올려다줍니다.

당장의 이익보다 ‘사람’을 얻기 위해 힘쓰십시요.

First, Humble mind

Andy gets a job interview with Runway magazine's editor-in-chief as she fails to get the press job she wants. She is of course not interested in runway fashion magazines. She goes to the interview without any preparation research. At least without googling the editor-in-chief who uses herself as a secretary. What Andy needs is humble mind. She seems to see journalists as a higher-level elite career, a fashion vanity, and a lower intellectual career. She is not ready to join Runway. Don't forget even when you're taking a field that isn't what you want. There is someone who even envy you for your interview. If Miranda's secretary's job is a chance of a million , that opportunity will always be a good spec.

First of all, you should have a thorough pre-research of the company and the person in charge. And be grateful and humble to the boss and company taking time for you.

Second, Best

Andy's tricky and grumpy editor, Miranda, makes Andy a lot of work. She goes to Nigel and complains that Miranda hates herself. At least she wants to be rewarded for her hard work, and Nigel advises Andy not to be whining. Nigel said that Runway magazine is the art of creating a part of life, not just a magazine book, but a lighthouse of hope to Nigel. Andy begins to realize. She was wrong that she didn’t even prepare to do her best for the Runway. The place where she is staying for a while is the dream job for someone.

We tend to make it easy to say that we did our best. It means that we have done our best. That means there's not much energy or energy left to invest in the future. Please plan your work schedule and be ready to learn rather than complain that my boss doesn't acknowledge me even though I’ve done my best.. Don't make it easy to say that you've done your best, secondly, for beginners. It's best to change yourself rather than try to change your boss.

Third, Networking

Miranda tells Andy to bring the unpublished Harry Potter manuscript to their twin daughters. Wow ~ Unpublished manuscript? And get Harry Potter? It's a really difficult order.

Andy remembers the famous writer Christian Thompson who met and ran Miranda's errand, with his help to get Harry Potter unpublished manuscript. Miranda is amazed by Andy's abilities. Andy's confidence comes from his network management. Fourth, Followership

Andy decides to find her dream rather than live like Miranda. It was thanks to the handwritten fax that Miranda sent to the editor that Andy was hired in the newspaper reporter's interview. Miranda wrote a short recommendation letter for Andy. The reason is that Andy got the work done well. Be sure to make at least one boss who will recommend you with saying that I guarantee.

Rather, thank the boss who made you do the harsh job as a new employee. It was because you learned a lot how to work when you were a beginner in society.
