[천재성Genius] 영화 굿 윌 헌팅의 실존인물?(ENG Good Will Hunting VS The Man Who Knew Infinity)

라마누잔은 인도가 낳은 20세기 최고의 수학 천재라 불리는 실제 인물입니다. 영화 속 윌은 천재적인 기억력과 수리 능력을 갖춘 상처 깊은 청년이죠.

MIT의 램보 교수가 마음의 문이 닫힌 상처 많은 윌을 동료 상담가 숀에게 부탁하는 장면이죠. 램보 교수는 윌이 제 2의 라마누잔이라고 흥분하며 말합니다. 

자, 그러면, 천재는 어떻게 다를까요? 

영상 속에서 윌과 라마누잔의 천재성이 보이실 겁니다.

천재는 누군가에게 배워본 적 없이도 스스로 학습하여 결과물을 만들어 내는 능력을 갖춘 자죠. 한마디로 천부적으로 범접할 수 없게 우수한 재능을 타고 난 겁니다.

켄 로빈슨은 ‘엘리먼트’ 에서 멘토의 역할을 4가지로 구분했습니다. 인지, 격려, 촉진, 확장입니다. 천재에게도 반드시 필요한 요소죠.

하디교수는 노트 필기를 하지 않고 가만히 보고 있는 라마누잔에게 직접 나와서 문제를 풀게 하죠. 어떻게 알았냐고 묻자, “그냥 할 뿐입니다”라고 답합니다. 

굿윌 헌팅의 램보교수는 대학원 학생들을 시험하기 위해 교실 밖 복도에 난해한 문제를 적어 놓습니다. 그 문제를 푼 사람은 바로 MIT청소부 윌이죠. 램보 교수가 조교와 강의실을 나오면서 복도 칠판에 낙서하고 있는 윌을 보게 되고, 그것은 낙서가 아닌 또 다른 문제의 수학 증명을 해냈다는 것을 알게 됩니다. 

인지의 경우는 건너뛰어도 되겠네요. 천재들은 자신의 재능과 능력을 정확하게 알고 있죠. 드라마 대장금에서 절대미각을 가진 어린 장금이의 대사가 문득 생각나네요. 

“어찌 홍시라 생각하느냐 하시면 그냥 홍시 맛이 나서 홍시라 하온건대.”

이처럼 천재는 선천적입니다. 천재에게 필요한 것은 바로 격려, 촉진, 확장의 세 가지입니다.

라마누잔에게 자신의 재능을 펼치길 격려하는 안나의 말입니다.

라마누잔이 목표를 향해 매진할 수 있도록 용기를 주며 노력하고 성취할 수 있도록 격려하고 있죠.

라마누잔에게 안나가 있었다면, 윌에게는 척이라는 멋진 격려자가 있습니다. 

척으로 인해서 윌은 마음의 동요가 생기게 됩니다 척의 진심을 아니까요.

윌의 미래를 위해 자신들과의 세상을 떠나게 만드는 척은 진짜 친구죠. 마지막 부분, 자신의 말대로 떠나 버린 윌의 집을 바라보며 씁쓸한 미소 짓는 척의 모습, 참 인상적입니다. 그리고 차 안에서 기다리는 동료들에게 쿨하게 말하죠 “그가 없어＂남자들의 브로맨스란 이런건가요? 부럽네요.

케임브리지 대학의 하디교수는 라마누잔을 영국왕립학회 회원으로 만들어 줍니다.

무적의 독창성이란 말, 엄청난 칭찬이군요. 이처럼 촉진자는 인맥을 나누어 주고 재능이 나아갈 수 있는 길을 함께 개척해줍니다.

굿윌 헌팅으로 넘어가 볼까요. MIT의 램보 교수는 윌이 수학 공부를 하면서 정신적 치료를 받을 수 있게 상담가를 연결해주죠. 하지만 윌은 다섯 명의 상담가를 갈아치우게 됩니다. 나중에 결국 숀에게로 정착하게 되지만요.

라마누잔은 문화적 차이와 종교적 신념으로 케임브리지대학에서 크게 고생합니다. 우울증을 앓았던 것으로 추측되기도 하구요. 설상가상이란 이럴 때 사용하는 말인가 봅니다. 라마누잔은 결핵 판결을 받게 되죠. 심신쇠약 상태에서 런던의 한 역에서 다가오는 기차를 향해 철로에 뛰어들어 자살시도를 합니다.

라마누잔에게 부인 자나키는 인도로 돌아가야 하는 귀소본능 같은 존재였죠. 자나키는 라마누잔이 서른 세살 요절 후 60년 이상을 혼자 가난과 고독의 삶을 살아가게 됩니다. 

반면 우리의 윌에게도 사랑하는 사람이 생깁니다. 하버드대학에 다니는 스카일라를 만나면서 조금씩 마음을 열기 시작하죠. 사랑하는 사람은 정서적인 안정감과 삶의 의욕을 주게 됩니다.

자 그럼, 라마누잔에게는 없고 윌에게만 존재하는, 천재에게 가장 필요한 사람은 누굴까요?

바로 심리치료사 숀과 같은 사람입니다. 라마누잔이 숀과 같은 사람을 만났더라면 우울증에 걸리지도 자살 시도를 하지 않았을 수도 있죠. 어쩌면 그런 안타까움으로 “굿 윌 헌팅”이 만들어졌는지도 모릅니다.

켄 로빈슨은 재능과 열정이 만나는 지점을 엘리먼트라고 부릅니다 숀은 그의 재능을 바로 열정으로 옮겨가도록 동기부여하죠.

숀은 윌의 아픈 기억을 보듬어주고 치유하는 역할을 담당합니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 장면이죠. 과거에 대한 아픔을 숨기지 않고 스스로 자신의 본모습을 드러내게 해주고 있어요. “너 잘못이 아니야”  공감이란 이처럼 긴 말이 필요 없나 봅니다

확장자는 재능의 한계를 넘어서게 만들고 더 중요한 것은 재능에 목적의식을 불러 일으켜 주죠. 천재적 지능을 뛰어넘어 지혜로운 삶을 사는 법, 올바른 인생 방향에 대해 깨닫게 해줍니다

16세 하버드대 수학과에 입학한 카진스키는 MK울트라를 주도하던 심리학자 머레이 교수가 이끄는 "고의적으로 잔인한 심리 실험" 연구에 참여 당하죠. 매주 누군가가 카진스키를 언어로 학대하고 굴욕감을 줍니다. 카진스키의 내면은 악마적 증오와 분노, 열등감과 패배의식이 쌓여갑니다 훗날 UC 버클리 대학의 조교수로 선임되었고 최연소 수학 교수가 됩니다. 나이 24살에 말이죠.

갑자기 대학을 사직한 후 막노동을 하는데 그곳에서 여성 노동자를 짝사랑하게 되죠 관계에 서투른 그는 거절당합니다 시간이 지날수록 사회에 대한 분노가 쌓여 결국 폭탄 테러범이 됩니다 현재 교도소에 복역중이지요.

어린 시절 남다른 천재성으로 하버드 대학에 조기 입학한 카잔스키에게 부모의 기대는 당연히 컸겠죠. 방에서 나오지 않으며 공부만 했다고 하네요. 하버드 대학에 조기 입학한 그에게는 친구도, 연인도, 멘토도 없었습니다. 그가 숀 같은 심리 치료사를 만났다면 그의 인생도 달라져 있겠지요?

이 영상을 만들다 보니 저희 연구소를 찾아온 수학 영재 소년이 생각납니다. 어머니가 데리고 온 초등학생의 경우 온갖 영재교실을 섭렵했더군요. 그 소년은 교우관계 부적응에 정서적으로 상당히 불안한 모습이었습니다. 저는 학부모께 소년이 좋아하는 것 이외에 모든 학원을 그만두게 할 것, 친구들과 노는 시간을 더 많이 갖게 할 것을 조언했죠. 아마 제 조언을 듣지 않았을 겁니다.

천재의 재능을 꽃피워주게 하기 위해서 가장 중요한 것은 부모의 기대도, 일류대도 아닙니다. 그들에게 가장 중요한 것은 바로 자신을 사랑하고 또한 누군가에게 사랑받는 일입니다 그래야지 천재성을 세상을 위해 올바르게 사용할 수 있으니까요 .

Ramanuzan is a real person who was born in India as the best mathematical genius of the 20th century. Will in the movie is a mathematical genius with heartbroken memory.

MIT's Professor Lambeau asks fellow counselor Sean for Will. Lambeau  is excited to say that Will is the second Ramanuzan.

So, how is genius different?

A genius is a person who has the ability to learn and produce results without learning from anyone. In short, he was born with inborn superior talents.

Ken Robinson distinguished the role of a mentor in four elements: recognition, encouragement, facilitating, stretching.

Professor  sees Ramanuzan, who does not take notes in his class, and asks him to come to the board and contribute for the math question.  How did you know? “I'm just doing it.”

Professor Rambo writes an esoteric math question in the hallway outside the classroom to test the graduate students, and it is Will who solved the problem. Will works as a cleaner in MIT. As Rambo leaves the classroom with his teaching assistant, he sees Will, who is graffitiing on the corridor's board, and finds that he's done a mathematical proof of another problem.

We can skip the case of recognition. Geniuses have their own talents.

They know their ability correctly.

In the Korean drama Dae Jang Geum, I am reminded of a young Jang Geum who has an absolute taste.

“How do you think it's the taste of persimmon? It's just the taste of persimmon”

Genius is born like this

There are three things a genius needs: encouragement, facilitating, and stretching.

Anna encourages Ramanuzan to develop his talents.

He encourages Ramanzanjan to strive and achieve towards his goals.

If Ramanuzan had Anna, Will has a wonderful encouragement of buddy called Chuck.

Chuck causes a sense of turmoil from Will. Will knows his sincerity.

It's a real friend who urges Will to leave the world with them for his future. The last scene looking at Will's house as he left, is impressive with his bitter smile, pretending to be OK. He says to other colleagues in the car, “ He is not here”

This is what bromance is for! I envy their sincere relationships.

Professor Hardy at Cambridge University makes Ramanuzan a member of the the UK Royal Society

 Invincible originality is an amazing compliment. Likewise, the facilitator shares his network and opens the way for his future.

Let's move on to ‘Goodwill Hunting’. MIT's professor Lambeau connects a counselor to help Will get mental treatment while studying math. But Will replaces five counselors, who eventually settle down to Sean.

Ramanuzan suffers greatly from the University of Cambridge due to cultural differences and religious beliefs. To make matters worse, Ramanuzan is convicted of tuberculosis. In a state of weakness, he jumps on the railroad tracks and attempts suicide at a station in London.

For Ramanuzan, his wife Janaki was a homing instinct to return to India. Janaki lived a life of poverty and loneliness for more than 60 years after Ramanuzan died at thirty-three years old.

On the other hand, Will also has a loved one. As he meets Skylar from Harvard University, he starts to open his heart a little bit. Loved ones give emotional stability and motivation to life.

So who is the most needed person for a genius that exists only in Will and not in Ramanuzan?

This is the same person as psychotherapist Sean. If Ramanuzan met someone like Sean, he might not be depressed or not committed suicide. Perhaps that sadness of genius may create "Good Will Hunting".

Ken Robinson calls element where talent meets passion.  Sean motivates Will to turn his talent into passion.

Sean's role is to heal Will's painful memories. It's my favorite scene. Will does not hide the pain of the past any more, but shows his true self. “It's not your fault.” Empathy doesn't have to be long like this.

Stretching role pushes Will to elevate beyond the limits of his talents. More importantly, mentor provides his talents with a sense of purpose. Mentor’s role makes Will realize how to live a wise life beyond genius intelligence and the right way of life.

Kazinski, a 16-year-old Harvard graduate student, is involved in a "intentional cruel psychological experiment" study led by Professor Murray, a leading psychologist at MK Ultra. Every week someone abuses and humiliates Kazinski. Kazinski’ inner self creates hates, anger, inferiority, and sense of defeat. He later became assistant professor at UC Berkeley and became the youngest professor of mathematics at the  age  of 24.

Suddenly, after resigning from college, he goes to labor work, where he crushes on a female worker. But he is rejected from her.

Kaznaski’s parental expectations were high for him who entered Harvard University early because he was extraordinary genius. He doesn't come out of the room, just studying. Early in Harvard, he had no friends, no lovers, no mentors. If he met a psychotherapist like Sean, his life would be different.

This video clips remind me of a gifted math boy visitng our institute. He was a elementary school student brought by his mother. He attended all kinds of gifted classes. The boy was very emotionally anxious about the maladjustment of his friendship. 

I advised his mother that he quit all the private classes other than the boy really likes and to have more time to play with his friends. She probably didn't listen to my advice.

The most important thing to make a genius grow is not the expectation of parents or top-notch universities The most important thing for them is to love themselves and be loved by someone so that they can use genius talents to be right for the world.
