[정체성 Identity]죽은 시인의 사회, 공부가 인생의 전부는 아니다!(ENG Dead Poets Society review)

영화 죽은 시인의 사회의 키팅 선생님은 규율과 전통의 웰튼 아카데미 첫 시간, 학생들에게 뜻밖의 수업을 합니다.

그가 첫 수업에서 던지는 메시지는 바로“카르페 디엠”입니다.

라틴어 시 한 구절에서 유래된 말이죠.

호라티우스의 "현재를 잡아라, 가급적 내일이란 말은 최소한만 믿어라"(Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero) 부분 구절입니다.

자 그러면 키팅 선생님이 전하는 “카르페 디엠”,  자신의 인생을 독특하게 만드는 공식 4가지를 살펴보도록 하겠습니다.

첫번째, 인생 목적

페이스북의 창업자 마크 저커버그는 2017년 하버드 대학 졸업 축사에서 자신의 인생목적은 모든 사람이 사명감을 갖게 되는 세상을 만드는 일이라고 말했습니다. 그는 존 F 케네디 대통령이 NASA 연구소를 방문한 일화를 소개합니다. 케네디 대통령은 빗자루를 들고 청소하는 청소원에게 무슨 일을 하느냐고 물었다고 해요.

청소원은 “저는 인류를 달에 보내는 일을 돕습니다” 라고 대답합니다.

키팅 선생님이 말한 것처럼 여러분의 존재가 어떻게 세상에 기여할 수 있을까요?

여러분의 시는 어떤 것이 될까요?

두번째, 자기주체성

미국에서는 아이덴터티란 말을 즐겨 사용합니다.  고유한 주체성을 나타내는 말이죠. 

키팅 선생님이 월트 휘트만의 시를 인용한 말을 기억해보세요.

“답은 바로 이것

네가 여기에 있다는 것

삶이 존재하고 자신이 존재한다는 것

장엄한 연극은 계속되고

너도 한 편의 시가 될 수 있다는 것”

자, 여러분 지금 이 순간, 앞에 놓인 거울을 통해 자신을 한번 비춰보세요. 그리고 질문해보세요.

“나는 누구인가”

“나는 왜 사는가?”

“나는 어떻게 살고 싶은가?”라고요

타인의 시선을 의식하지 말고 무슨 일을 할 때 가장 행복한지 스스로 자신에게 소리 내어 물어보세요. 그리고 투쟁하십시요. 늦어지면 세상의 잣대 안에서 안정을 찾게 될테니까요

세번째, 용기를 가져라

키팅 선생님은 토드에게 자신의 내면에 매우 가치있는 것이 들어있다고 말하죠. 여러분은 여러분의 야성의 소리를 들어보셨나요?

누군가에게 자신의 꿈을 절실하게 얘기해 보셨나요?

“그게 해서 대체 뭘 어쩌려구?”이런 말 들어보셨어요?

저는 여러 번 수차례 들어보았습니다. 

랄프 왈도 에머슨은 다음과 같이 말합니다

“어떤 진로를 선택하더라도 당신에게 틀리다고 하는 사람이 있기 마련이다. 그 사람의 말이 옳은 것처럼 느껴지는 사건도 일어나기 마련이다. 따라서 진로를 계획하고 그것을 완주하는 데는 용기가 필요하다.”

여러분이 재능과 열정이 교차하는 그 일을 위해 누군가에게 평가받는 것을 두려워하지 마세요. 그리고 그 날의 박수 소리를 마음 속 깊이 간직하십시요.

네번째: 독창성

키팅 선생님은 다른 사람과 똑같이 일체감을 갖는 것, 또한 타인의 인정을 받는 것보다 자신의 신념에 따른 독창적인 삶을 살라고 조언합니다. 로버트 프로스트의 “선택받지 않은 길”시처럼 말이죠. 자기 걸음걸이와 속도로, 어떤 방향이든지, 그리고 무엇을 원하든지 말입니다.

헨리 데이비드 소로는 28세에 삶의 본질을 찾기 위해 외딴 시골 자신이 손수 지은 오두막에서 2년2개월을 기거합니다. 자신의 삶을 헛되이 하고 싶지 않아서였죠.  은둔의 사색 시간은 “월든”이라는 최고의 명작을 탄생시킵니다. 

벚꽃은 봄에 피는 대신 빨리 지고, 가을에 피는 국화는 늦게 피지만 더 오래갑니다. 그 이유는 벚꽃은 벚꽃이고 국화는 국화이기 때문이죠. 여러분 역시 특별합니다. 자신의 숨은 가치를 과소평가하지 마세요.

저의 실제 롤모델인 키팅 선생님은 닐의 자살에 대한 책임으로 이렇게 학교를 떠나 갑니다.

그는 학생들에게 공부가 인생의 전부가 아니라는 것, 자신만의 고유한 공식의 인생을 설계할 것을 일러주고 떠난 셈이죠

너희들의 고유한 꿈을 펼쳐라

중요한 것은 속도가 아니라 방향이라는 걸 말입니다.

Mr. Keating of the Dead Poets Society teaches students the first lesson of the Wellton Academy of Discipline and Tradition.

His first message is "Carpe Diem."from a verse of Latin poetry.

This is the part of Horatius' phrase "Catch the present, believe tomorrow as little as possible" (Carpe diem, quam minimum credula postero).

Let's take a look at Mr. Keating's “Carpe Diem” and the four formulas that make our life unique.

Frist, Purpose of Life

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook founder, made a speech at Harvard University commencement in 2017 that his life purpose is to create a world where everyone has a mission. He introduces the story of President John F Kennedy's visit to the NASA Institute. President Kennedy said he asked the cleaner who was holding the broom and what he was doing.

The cleaner says, "I help send mankind to the moon."

How can your presence contribute to the world as Keating said?

What will your poem be?

Second, Self-identity

Americans like to use the word ‘identity’.

It represents their own uniqueness.

Remember that Mr Keating quoted Walt Whitman's poem:

“The answer is this

That you are here

That life exists and that you exist

Majestic play continues

You can be a poem. ”

Now, look at yourself at this moment in the mirror in front of you. And ask a question

"Who am I"

“Why do I live?”

"How do I want to live?"

Don't be conscious of others' eyes and ask yourself what you are most happy about doing. And struggle. If you are late, you will find stability in the world.

Third, Have courage

Keating tells Todd that there's something very valuable inside.

Have you heard your wildness?

Have you ever told someone about your dreams?

“What are you doing with that?” Have you heard this?

I have heard it many times.

Ralph Waldo Emerson says:

“There are some people who choose the wrong course for you. Something happens when the person feels right. So it takes courage to plan your career and get it done. ”

Do not be afraid that you will be judged by someone for the work where talent and passion intersect. And keep the applause of the day deep in your heart.

Fourth, Originality

Keating advises us to live an original life according to one's beliefs rather than to be as united as others and to be recognized by others. Like Robert Frost's "Unselected Road" poem, at his own pace and speed, in any direction and whatever he wants.

Henry David Thoreau lived two years and two months at the age of 28 in a cottage built by himself in a remote country to find the essence of his life. He didn't want to waste his life in vain. Hermit's contemplation time creates the best masterpiece of “Walden”.

Cherry blossoms are fast, instead of blooming in spring, and chrysanthemums blooming in autumn are late, but longer. The reason is that cherry blossom is cherry blossom and chrysanthemum is chrysanthemum. You are special too. Don't underestimate your hidden value

My real role model, Mr. Keating, leaves the school with Neil's suicide responsibility.

He left students to teach them that studying is not everything in life, to design a life of their own formula.

Unfold your own dream

The important thing is not the speed, but the direction.
