[4차산업혁명시대 교육] “스쿨오브락” 이런 수업 어때요? (ENG “School of Rock" PBL Education)

 

 미국의 의과대학 교수 하워드 배로우스는 단순한 지식의 전달이 아닌 학습자들이 서로 협력해서 실제 문제를 해결하는 PBL수업을 고안했습니다. 

현재 4차산업혁명 시대 교육방법으로  PBL수업이 다양한 분야에서 혁신 수업으로 관심받고 있어요. 

오늘은 영화 스쿨오브락에서 보여지는 완벽한 PBL 교육 현장으로 한번 가 보실까요? 

1. 현실적 맥락의 프로젝트

무명 밴드의 기타리스트인 듀이 핀은 밴드에서 쫓겨나고 집세를 낼 형편도 되지 못했어요. 친구인 대리교사 네드인 것으로 가장하고 돈을 벌기 위해 교사인 척 합니다. 

학생들을 가르칠 마음이 전혀 없었던 듀이는 우연히 음악 수업을 엿듣게 되고, 아이들의 뛰어난 음악 실력에 감탄하고 락을 가르쳐야겠다는 생각을 하죠. 그는 아이들에게 락을 가르치기 시작하고 학교 교장선생님과 교사들에게 들키지 않도록 주의합니다. 그의 목표는 따로 있었으니, 바로 락 밴드들이 모이는 대회에 나가서 상금을 타는 일이었죠.

졸지에 선생님이 된 주인공 듀이 핀은 락 밴드 만들기 프로젝트가 머리와 몸과 두뇌를 시험하는 일이라고 말하고 있어요. 초등학생들을 위한 락 콘테스트 프로젝트 정말 멋지지 않은가요?

제 대학교 학부 수업은 팀 별로 두 가지 프로젝트를 시행하게 설계되어 있어요. 보시는 것처럼 첫번째 시나리오는 주제를 선정하고 대상을 정해서 실제 교육과정을 기획, 설계, 시연하는 일입니다. 동료와 교수자 평가를 받게 되어 있어요.

두번째 시나리오는 우리나라 기업과 국가를 선정해서 그 나라 문화와 제도를 분석한 다음에, 제품 판매전략과 주재원 교육 과정을 설계하는 일입니다. 보시는 샘플은 제 학생이 제출한 프로젝트 목차입니다.

2. 학습자 역량중심 맞춤형 학습

PBL 수업에서는 학생들의 특징이 잘 반영된 팀을 구성하는 것이 중요해요. 교수자는 학생들의 재능과 역량을 파악하고 있으면 아무래도 유리하지요. 개개인의 특성과 경험, 장단점을 아는 것이 중요합니다. 

제 수업의 팀 리더는 팀원들이 자발적으로 선출하게 되어 있구요. 팀 리더는 프로젝트의 방향을 점검하고 임무 역할 선정에 관여하죠. 

팀리더는 무임승차자를 방지하기 위해 팀 일지를 제출하게 되어 있어요. 팀 일지를 작성하는 것만으로도 팀원들은 자신의 역할에 충실하게 되어있죠. 일종의 무임승차자 방지 감시 역할이라고 할까요?

아이들이 스스로 자신의 역할을 선택하게 하는 것 역시 좋은 학습 방법이겠죠? 내재적 동기부여를 불러 일으키는 일이니까요. 

교수자는 학생들에게 필요한 피드백을 제공합니다. PBL수업에서 피드백은 아주 중요해요. 결과물을 만들어내기 위한 과정을 학생들과 함께 하는 일이니까요. 제 경우도 학습자에게 과제 제출 전 다양한 피드백을 주고 있습니다

피드백 후 보다 발전된 모습이 보이시나요? 

3. 협력적 문제해결활동 

아이들이 학생주도 자체 회의를 열고 있는 모습입니다. 약간은 험한 말들이 오갔지만, 그들은 락 컨테스트에 참가하기로 결정한 것 같아요. 아이들의 적극적인 참여가 엿보이는 장면이었습니다.

듀이가 정식 교사가 아니라는 사실이  탄로나고 그는 모든 것을 포기하고 폐인처럼 틀어박히지만 아이들이 듀이를 찾아오며 결국 밴드 대회에 참여하게 됩니다. 드디어 아이들의 프로젝트를 발표하는 날입니다.

선생님은 각자 맡은 역할을 점검하구요.

아이들은 각자의 역할에 충실하게 임하죠. 밴드 이름을 “스쿨오브락”이라고 멋지게 지었네요. 와, 덤으로 티셔츠까지 제작했어요. 중요한 것은 교수자가 학습자에게 그들의 임무를 잘 이행하도록 도와주는 일입니다. 자 보시죠. 선생님이 아이들을 믿어줄 때 자존감이 상승하겠지요?

선생님의 기대는 아이들을 성장시킵니다. 각자 자신의 위치에서 최선을 다하는 것만 남은 것 같아요. 교사의 기대와 관심이 아이들의 성적에 영향을 미친다는 로젠탈 효과(Rosenthal Effect)가 생각나네요.

드디어 우여곡절 많았던 프로젝트의 마감시간입니다. 아이들은 멋진 락 발표를 하죠. 정말 근사합니다 아이들의 락 콘테스트 프로젝트에 전문가, 일반인, 학부모로 평가자가 결성되어 있으니 완벽하게 훌륭한 심사위원들을 갖춘 셈이죠 .

아이들은 우승을 하지는 못했지만요. 프로젝트를 완벽하게 성공시킨 아이들이 부쩍 성장한 모습입니다.  자신감이 하늘을 찌르는 듯 보이네요.

아이들에게 중요한 것은 우승이 아닌 자신들의 힘으로 해냈다는 성취감입니다. 

PBL수업 목적은 학생들의 자기주도성에 있습니다. 미래 시대의 학습은 억지로 하는 공부가 아닌 스스로 찾아서 문제 해결하여 응용하는 일이니까요. 4차산업혁명 시대 인재는 누군가와 협업하여 창의융합적으로 설계, 제작할 수 있는 능력을 갖춘 자죠. 

그런 의미에서  “스쿨오브락”의 호레이스 그린 초등학교 학생들은 협력적 자기주도적 문제해결자라고 불러야겠어요.

현재 여러분의 자녀와 학생들은 어떤 모습인가요? 자기주도적이기 보다 학원주도적 생활에 지쳐있지 않습니까?

Howard S. Barrows is a professor of medical school in the United States. He designed a performance-based assessment class where learners work together to solve real problems, not just the transfer of knowledge.

Currently, Project-Based Learning or Problem-Based Learning is emerging as an educational method in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

So let’s move on to the perfect PBL class in the movie, “School of Rock”

First, Real-world based project

Dewey, the guitarist, was kicked out of the band and couldn't afford to pay the rent. He disguise to be his friend's substitute teacher, Ned, and pretend to be a teacher to make money.

Dewey, who had no intention of teaching students, accidentally overheard a music class, and again thought of admiring their children's outstanding musical skills and teaching them rock. He begins to teach children to rock and is careful not to be noticed by school principal and teachers. His goal was to go to a rock tournament where rock bands gathered and win prizes.

Dewey says that the rock band project is a test of the head, body and brain. Isn’t it cool to make rock band for students?

The second semester class in my university is designed to carry out two projects for each team. As you can see, the first scenario is to select a topic and target a subject to plan, design and demonstrate the actual curriculum. Students have to be evaluated by peers and me. 

The second scenario involves selecting  a Korean company and a foreign country analyzing the culture and systems and designing product sales strategies and training courses for expatriates. The sample is submitted by my student and is the contents of the project for Seoul National University Hospital to enter the Middle East.

Students learn critical thinking and strategic thinking through various analysis and evaluation based on theory and experience.

Seoul National University Hospital is offering a training program for prospective dispatchers to enter the Middle East. Do you look difficult? My students are doing quite well for their project.  I have realized that team is better than one person.

Second, learner competency-based customized learning

In PBL classes, it is important to have a team that reflects the capacities of the students. As a teacher, it is important to know each person's characteristics, strengths and experiences. 

The team leader of my class is voluntarily elected by the team. The team leader checks the direction of the project and is involved in selecting mission roles.

Team leaders are required to submit team logs to prevent free riders. Just by keeping a team journal, team members can stick to their roles. Is it a kind of freerider protection watchdog?

Is it a good way to let children choose their roles? It causes intrinsic motivation.

Instructors give students the feedback they need. Feedback is very important in the PBL class.  I work with the student to produce the result. In my case, I'm giving feedback to learners before submitting assignments.

Third, collaborative problem solving activities

The children are holding their own student meetings. There are some tough words coming and going, but I think they decided to enter the rock contest. This is a scene of active participation of children.

The fact that Dewey is not a licensed teacher is known in the school, and he gives up everything and sticks  at home like a dead man, but the children come to Dewey and eventually join the rock contest.

It is finally the day to report the children's project.

Children are faithful to their role. The band was named "Rock of School" nicely. Wow, They already made a T-shirt on their own. What's important is that instructors delegate their duties to learners. Let's see. Students’ self-esteem increase when teachers trust them.

Teacher's expectations grow children. I think it's just left to do their best in their positions. The scene reminds of Rosenthal Effect that teacher’s expectation reflects student’s records.

It's finally the deadline for a project that's been troubled. Look at the great rock presentations of the children. The children's rock contest project has great evaluators including experts, members of the public, and parents.

The team, “School of Rock” didn't win, but the kids who perfected the project seemed to have grown up confidently. 

What's important for children is the sense of accomplishment, not the first prize.

The purpose of PBL classes is for students to self-direct. Learning in the future is not forcing children to study, but to find and solve problems for themselves. The talents of the 4th Industrial Revolution have the ability to collaborate with someone and design and produce creatively.

Horace Green Elementary students in “School of Rock” should be called collaborative self-directed problem solvers.
